Electric Space Heater Tips

It’s that time of the year again.  Bitter cold temperatures create the need for supplemental heat.  Space heaters are the most popular source for this heat.

One of our most common service calls this time of the year are for people having issues with their circuit breakers tripping.  Upon arrival to these calls, a majority of the time we find our customer has more than one space heater plugged into one circuit.  We feel there are a few things you need to know about space heaters.

The majority of space heaters that are on the market today draw 10-15 amps per heater.  The most common circuits in homes and businesses are 15 or 20 amp circuits.  Therefore when (1) space heater is plugged into the circuit there is little power left before the circuit breaker or fuse becomes overloaded.

If you have (2) or more space heaters plugged in at your home or business and you are tripping breakers or blowing fuses, try relocating a space heater to a different location in your home or business.  If relocating your space heater to a different location is not an option you will need to call an electrician to install an additional circuit for that area.
